The Question Nobody Asks About a Franchise — That Tells You Everything

Most prospective franchise owners spend the majority of their evaluation time on two questions: how much does it cost and how much can I make?

Both are legitimate and important. Neither is the most revealing question you can ask.

The question that tells you the most about a franchise system is this: what happens to franchisees who struggle?

Not what the brochure says happens. Not what the sales process promises will happen. What actually happens — operationally, relationally, financially — when a franchisee in the system hits a difficult period and needs support that goes beyond the training manual?

The answer to that question reveals the actual relationship between a franchisor and its franchise partners. It tells you whether the support structure is designed for performance or for optics. It tells you whether the people at the top of the system have a genuine stake in your success or a financial model that performs regardless of yours.

Ask it of current franchisees, not of the development team. Ask it specifically and listen not just to what they say, but how quickly and how comfortably they say it.

A franchise system that has genuinely built its model around franchisee success will answer that question without hesitation and with specifics. A system that has not will give you something polished and general.

That answer is worth more than any pro forma ever written.
